Redispersible Polymer Powder in Mortar Applications

Page views :
Release Date : 2026-03-25

1. Product Overview

Redispersible Polymer Powder is a free-flowing white powder produced by spray-drying polymer emulsions such as vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymers and acrylic copolymers. It has good water solubility and can redisperse into a stable polymer emulsion when mixed with water, forming a continuous polymer film upon drying.

This polymer film plays an important role in enhancing cohesion, adhesion, and flexibility in mortar. Redispersible polymer powder is widely used in dry-mix mortar products such as tile adhesives, external thermal insulation mortars, self-leveling mortars, and putty powders, serving as a key additive for improving mortar performance.

Main Components: Vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE), acrylic copolymers
Appearance: White free-flowing powder
Packaging: 25 kg/bag

2. Working Mechanism

The mechanism of redispersible polymer powder in mortar includes the following aspects:

2.1 Polymer Film Formation

When redispersible polymer powder comes into contact with water in mortar, it redisperses into an emulsion. As cement hydrates and water evaporates, polymer particles gradually coalesce, forming a continuous polymer film between cement hydration products and on aggregate surfaces. This film binds various components together, creating a composite material with structural integrity.

2.2 Improved Interfacial Bonding

In cement-based materials, the polymer film fills pores between cement hydration products and enhances interfacial bonding with substrates. Redispersible polymer powder significantly improves tensile bond strength in mortar.

2.3 Enhanced Flexibility

The elastic modulus of the polymer film is lower than that of cement paste. Its incorporation reduces mortar brittleness, improving flexibility and deformation capacity. This is particularly important for resisting cracking caused by temperature changes and substrate movement.

2.4 Delayed Cement Hydration

Redispersible polymer powder has a certain retarding effect on cement hydration, with greater effects at higher dosages. However, it does not alter the types of cement hydration products, which remain primarily C-S-H gel and calcium hydroxide.

3. Key Functions in Mortar

3.1 Improved Bond Strength

Redispersible polymer powder significantly enhances the bonding performance of mortar with various substrates. In tile adhesives, it improves pull-off strength and adhesion under different conditions, including standard curing, heat cycling, freeze-thaw cycling, and water immersion.

In steel structure interface mortars, redispersible polymer powder is also a key material for enhancing bond strength.

3.2 Improved Workability

Redispersible polymer powder significantly increases mortar flowability while also improving water retention. This makes mortar easier to apply and extends open time.

3. Enhanced Flexibility

Redispersible polymer powder effectively improves mortar toughness and reduces elastic modulus, providing better deformation capacity and reducing shrinkage cracking risks. This is especially important for applications with high flexibility requirements, such as external thermal insulation systems and self-leveling mortars.

4. Improved Durability

The introduction of polymer film reduces mortar porosity and increases impermeability, thereby enhancing water resistance, freeze-thaw resistance, and aging resistance.

4. Main Application Areas

1. Tile Adhesives

Redispersible polymer powder is an essential functional additive in tile adhesives. It significantly improves bond strength and slip resistance while enhancing water resistance and freeze-thaw resistance. Whether for interior or exterior applications, walls or floors, polymer-modified tile adhesives provide more reliable bonding.

2. External Thermal Insulation Mortars

In external thermal insulation systems such as EPS-based insulation mortars, redispersible polymer powder acts as a binder and is a key component for ensuring bond strength and durability. It improves tensile, compressive, and flexural strength of insulation mortars while enhancing adhesion to substrates.

3. Self-Leveling Mortars

Redispersible polymer powder provides ideal rheology and flowability to self-leveling mortars, improving their bond strength and mechanical properties. Polymer-modified self-leveling mortars produce smooth, pore-free surfaces with excellent reliability and durability.

4. Interface Mortars

In applications such as steel structure interface mortars, redispersible polymer powder effectively improves compressive strength, flexural strength, and tensile bond strength, enhancing the bond between mortar and substrate.

5. Waterproofing Mortars

Redispersible polymer powder improves hydrophobicity and impermeability of mortar, making it suitable for waterproofing applications such as kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

6. Repair Mortars

Polymer-modified repair mortars offer good bond strength and flexibility, suitable for concrete structure crack repair and surface restoration.

7. Putty Powders

In interior and exterior wall putties, redispersible polymer powder improves workability, enhancing bond strength and crack resistance.

5. Usage Guidelines

1. Material Preparation

Check whether redispersible polymer powder has formed lumps before use. If lumps are present, sieve them to ensure good powder flowability.

2. Mixing Methods

Dry Mixing (Recommended): Premix redispersible polymer powder with cement, sand, and other dry materials according to the formulation, then add water and mix to the appropriate consistency. This method is suitable for large-scale dry-mix mortar production.

Dissolution Method: Gradually add the polymer powder to hot water (around 70°C) while stirring to form a slurry, then cool to room temperature before mixing with dry materials. Alternatively, prepare a hot water slurry and add cold water to adjust temperature.

3. Mixing Requirements

Ensure the mortar is uniformly mixed without lumps and achieves suitable consistency for application. Avoid localized clumping during mixing.

4. Application Conditions

The recommended ambient temperature for application is between 5°C and 35°C, with relative humidity below 80%. Avoid applying in high temperature, high humidity, or low temperature dry conditions.

5. Curing Requirements

After application, cure according to product requirements. Avoid impact from heavy objects and protect the applied surface from contamination to ensure full performance development.

6. Storage and Packaging

Packaging Specifications: 25 kg/bag

Storage Requirements:

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated warehouse

  • Avoid direct sunlight and rain exposure

  • Protect from moisture; keep packaging sealed

  • Transport vehicles should be equipped with waterproof covers
